#ThinkBigARU Pitching Competition

The #ThinkBigARU Pitching Competition is an exciting opportunity open to all Anglia Ruskin University students and recent graduates to pitch their business or business idea to a panel of entrepreneurs and people from the business community to receive feedback, support, networks, and other forms of investment.

FIRST PLACE: SMARTPLANTER

Project:

Smartplanter is a self-watering plant pot system that allows up to three months of water supply in a discreet reservoir and is perfect for all skill levels and anyone who enjoys house plants. The system uses wireless technology that allows the user to customise watering schedules and water plants remotely with the app, and options for plant sensors include soil moisture sensors for more accurate plant monitoring.

It aims to solve the problem of plants suffering from nutrient deficiency, wilting, root rot, yellow leaves, plant death, and other issues if they are not cared for properly. With a discreet and elegant design, Smartplanter fits in standard ceramic pots available in any household. It uses smart technology, is customisable, versatile, and has a large water capacity. Linked to an app, it is perfect for monitoring the health of plants and caring for them while on the move.

Awarded: £400

SECOND PLACE: AFADAPA ENTERPRISES

Project:

Afadapa Enterprises addresses Nigeria's fish market challenges where local production cannot meet the annual demand of 2.7 million metric tonnes, leading to over $1 billion in fish imports. This reliance on imports causes supply chain inefficiencies, rising costs, and quality issues.

The problems of inconsistent supply, high costs, limited product options are solved by Afadapa's integrated system for sustainable production and efficient distribution. By leveraging technology-driven farming and modern retail solutions, Afadapa Enterprises reduces costs, improves efficiency, and provides consumers with high-quality, convenient seafood options. This approach not only meets the rising demand but also ensures sustainable food security and economic growth in Nigeria and Africa.

Students:

  • Babatunde Bello - Computer Science

Awarded: £300

THIRD PLACE: EMPOWER CHANGE

Project:

Empower Change is dedicated to opening discussions about body image and eating disorder prevalence within the equine industry, where an estimated 42% of equestrians in the UK are affected. The organisation also provides a signposting service for those struggling, using its website to share its mission and personal stories. It aims to motivate the equestrian community to change mindsets, actions, and behaviours, ultimately foster a healthier industry.

Students:

  • Evie Berg - Equine Bioveterinary Science

Awarded: £200

FOURTH PLACE: ROOTS MARKETPLACE

Project:

Roots Marketplace aims to empower minority ethnic communities in the UK through an online marketplace connecting culturally relevant businesses with their target communities.

The team believes beauty, healthcare, and wellness industries in the UK often fail to serve minority ethnic groups adequately. With 18.3% of the population identifying as Black, Asian, or minority ethnic, 40% report difficulty finding suitable cosmetics and skincare, costing the industry an estimated £2.7 billion annually. Roots aims to bridge the gap in the market, ensuring everyone can access services designed for them. By leveraging technology and community focus, Roots will drive sustainable growth and inclusivity in the beauty, healthcare, and wellness industries. Users can discover, book, and review services on one central platform, from Afro hair braiders to aesthetic treatments. Businesses can advertise, manage bookings, and expand their clientele.
